Changes to the medical expenses rebate scheme have been announced by treasurer Wayne Swan in the 2012 Budget- it is proposed that the rebate shceme be means tests. Under the current arrangement this rebate, equivalent to 20 cents for every dollar in out-of-pocket costs over $2,000 is not means tested. The proposed changes, if passed by parliament, are scheduled to come into effect from 1 July 2012
